Micheal “Mick” Morton passed away peacefully on Jan. 21, 2024. He was born Aug. 22, 1939, in Bassett, to Matthew and Agnes (Knapp) Morton.

Mick grew up in Bassett and graduated from Rock County High School in 1954. He was a dedicated athlete and went on to attend Nebraska Wesleyan University, where he played football and was on the track and field team. Mick graduated from Wesleyan with his teaching certificate. While in Lincoln, Mick met and married the love of his life, Marilynn Joyce Morton. They married in 1957 and moved to Crete, where Mick taught high school chemistry and sciences for 33 years. Mick was a track and field coach for most of those 33 years as well as a football coach for all ages.

Mick was dedicated to his students and athletes and never met one he didn’t like. Mick was active in Sertoma and the community. He loved woodworking and going to auctions to find more items to fix up.
