Secretary of State donates to Youth Homelessness Matters Day

Nebraska Secretary of State, honorable Bob Evnen, made a contribution towards Youth Homelessness Matters Day while attending Crete Rotary on April 10. Evnen heard editor Amy Hausman speak about the awareness and fundraising campaign which includes her sleeping out for the cause on April 17 to raise funding for new shoes and backpacks.
During the introduction of Evnen's presentation on voter id's and election accuracy, he shared his connections to the Crete community and commitment to education. Evnen was on the State Board of Education for eight years and recognizes the effort that is undertaken by public schools for homeless children. Before giving his presentation he opened his personal wallet and made a donation.

Crete Public Library National Library Week activities continue

Thursday, April 11 - Preschool storytime at 10 a.m. and Spring Craft Time from 4-7 p.m.
Friday, April 12 - A sweet treat for all patrons checking out books this day.
Saturday, April 13 - Puzzle it out from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. by drop in.

Friend: A hub for female business owners

Although April marked the end of Women's History Month, the business scene in Friend spotlights women year-round. According to the Women's Business Enterprise National Council, just 42% of businesses in the United States are owned by women, however, the vast majority of businesses in Friend are woman-owned . Nominations sought for Czech Festival awards - Deadline May 1

Now is the time to remember volunteers who contribute to the success of the annual Wilber Czech Festival.
The Nebraska Czechs of Wilber honor people who have, by their contributions or efforts, contributed significantly to the preservation, enhancement or development of the Czech heritage with the Knights of Blanik and Ladies of Libuse community awards.
The recipient may or may not be of Czech descent and may or may not be a resident of Wilber or Nebraska. Since the awards were developed in 1969, 514 people have been honored with these awards.
Nominations for 2024 are currently being accepted. Submissions should include a short resume about the efforts of the individual being nominated. All nominations must be dated and signed to be considered. The 2024 deadline is May 1, 2024.

Cornhole shoot out in Wilber

A cornhole shoot out is scheduled for April 27 at TJ Sokol Hall in Wilber. Doors open at noon, registration begins at 2:30 p.m. Shooting begins at 4 p.m. Contact Will Togstad at (402) 432-5477 with questions.

Save the date: Cinco de Mayo Celebration Sunday, May 5

The Crete Chamber of Commerce Cinco de Mayo celebration will be held on Sunday, May 5 from 12-6 p.m. in the Crete City Park. The all ages, family friendly event will feature traditional dancers, pinatas and music. There will be a wide selection of cultural craft and food vendors.

Mom Walk Collective of Crete to hold first walk Saturday

The first walk of the Mom Walk Collective of Crete will hold their first walk Saturday, April 13 at 10:30 a.m. at Crete Carrier Trail at Crete Area Medical Center. Pets are asked not to join for the safety of the mothers and small children. The walk is open to all mothers including seasoned, those promoted to grandmothers, first-time moms, mothers-to-be, step and bonus mothers and foster mothers.

Crete runner-up, Egge seventh at Milford

The Crete golf team shot a 360 and finished as the runner-up at the Milford Invite April 10. Trace Egge and Theo Bohling both finished in the medals, with Egge shooting an 87 and placing seventh and Bohling finishing in 88 and 10th.

EMF has good day at Milford

EMF golfers won both the team and individual titles at the Milford Invite April 10. The team shot a 358 and finished two strokes ahead of second-place. Carter Milton carded an 80 over 18 holes to win the top individual spot.

Crete takes down Ralston in dual

The Crete girls' tennis team hosted its first dual for the 2024 season and defeated Ralston, going 3-0 in doubles and 5-1 in singles on April 10.
