Friend hosts New York missionaries

Missionaries from Long Island, New York visited Friend at the end of April. They lended helping hands to projects around town and bonded with community members through activities hosted by Friend Christian Assembly. Medal of Honor Recipient to be honored in Dorchester May 18

The public is invited to a special ceremony honoring Sergeant (Francis) Jefferson Coates, who served in the United States Army during the Civil War. He is buried at the City Cemetery in Dorchester, NE. The wreath will be presented during a short ceremony on Saturday, May 18 beginning at 3:00 pm at the cemetery. The American Legion Family from Post #264 will participate in the service. A reception will be held at the Dorchester Legion following the service until 5:00 pm and will include presentations of Quilts of Valor.
The Medal of Honor is the United States Armed Forces' highest military decoration and is awarded to recognize American soldiers, sailors, marines, airmen, guardians, and coast guardsmen who have distinguished themselves by acts of valor. The medal is normally awarded by the President of the United States and is presented "in the name of the United States Congress."

Crete City Council approves purchase of inclusive piece of playground equipment

On May 7 the Crete City Council approved the a bid proposal Creative Sites to install an inclusive piece of playground equipment at the City Park. The orbit, a version of a merry-go-round, is flush to the ground allowing children of all abilities and mobility devices ease of entry.

CPD announces addition of Matt Jonas to department

Crete Police Chief Gary Young announced at City Council that Matt Jonas has been selected to join the department as a sergeant. Jonas is coming to the department from the Saline County Sheriff’s office with many years of experience. Jonas onboards on May 19.

Curbside appliance pick up in Crete starts TODAY

The City of Crete is offering curbside pick up of major appliances today through Friday, May 10. Appliances with freon must have it removed and tagged prior to pick-up. Call the Public Works Office (402.826.4312) BEFORE 5pm on Thursday, May 9 to arrange a pick-up.No
pick-ups for calls made after the deadline.

CPS excuses all students for State Soccer May 9

Crete Public Schools announced there will be no school for all students on Thursday, May 9 to show support for the boys' varsity soccer team. The day off from classes will not extended the school year with a make up day.
The soccer team is traveling to Omaha to compete in the 2024 Boys' State Soccer Tournament. The Cardinals play at noon at Creighton University’s Morrison Stadium.

CCLC City Build Game Night today

Today Crete Public School's Crete’s Cardinal Community Learning Center (CCLC) will host a hands-on learning project that is teamed up with Doane University's Leadership 401 class. First and second grade students of CCLC used recycled materials to build a representation of how they believe Crete will look in 2040.
Buildings will be on display at the Crete Elementary Library on Wednesday, May 8 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. There will also be a variety of family games.

CU tops Doane for GPAC baseball crown

In the 2024 GPAC Baseball Championship Game, the 19th-ranked Bulldogs got the best of rival and 13th-ranked Doane, 5-1, on May 7 at Plum Creek Park, which welcomed its largest crowd of the season. The occasion marked the third time in four years that the two sides have met up in the conference title game. Both teams have qualified for the NAIA national tournament, which starts Monday, May 13.
The NAIA Selection Show scheduled for 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 9. That show can be viewed by accessing the NAIA YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/PlayNAIA) at that date and time. Opening round host locations were announced by the NAIA on May 1. The opening round is slated to play out May 13-16 with the NAIA World Series to follow in Lewiston, Idaho, May 24-31.

Crete will send seven athletes to the state track meet May 15 and 16. They are Lauren Eggerling, 400-meter dash; Corbin Coe, 300-meter hurdles; Marin Rasgorshek, shot put and discus; Logan Bessler, discus (district champion); Lesli Kratochvil, long jump, Allison McDowell, triple jump; and Glen Clouse, triple jump.
