Gabriel Benedict Gunther was called home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 19, 2022, at age 93. He passed away peacefully in San Antonio, Texas, at the Audie L. Murphy Veterans Health Care Center.

He was the most devoted, loving, and caring husband, father and grandfather who is so deeply missed. He will be cherished and loved forever and remain in his family’s hearts always.

The eldest of four children, Gabriel was born March 21, 1929, in Bigelow, Kansas, to parents Frank and Marie Gunther. He graduated from Frankfort, Kansas, High School in 1947 and completed basic training at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Army Base before honorably serving in the Korean War from 1951-1953 as a communications specialist. Gabriel completed his education at the railroad and transportation school in Kansas City, Missouri. Gabriel met his wife of 62 years, Sonja Tessar, in Crete, and they were married Aug. 13, 1960, later having two children, Grant and Sheryl. He retired in Lincoln after a 42-year career as a supervisory agent for the Burlington Northern Railroad. During his life, Gabriel enjoyed serving the Catholic Church, the Rotary Club and the Veterans of Foreign War and American Legion clubs.

Gabriel was beloved by everyone who ever met him, and his giving, caring and selfless nature brought such happiness to all those around him. He knew no strangers and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Gabriel excelled at technical skills and could find a clever solution in any situation. He loved being with his family and was the guiding light that brought them such joy. He was smart, and generous and honorable without fail.

Gabriel was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Virginia Vogelsberg of Home, Kansas; and his brother, David Gunther of Lenexa, Kansas. He is survived by his sister, Anna Mae Burgard of Albuquerque, New Mexico; wife, Sonja; son Grant (Elise); daughter Sheryl (Christopher); and grandsons, Christopher and Andrew, all of San Antonio, Texas, plus many nieces and nephews.

The funeral service was July 1. Final interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Crete. Memorial contributions are suggested in Gabriel’s honor to the donor’s choice. Condolences may be left for the family online at www.kunclfh.com.
