The Crete boys’ golf team had a lot of success at its first meet at Seward on March 28 as the Cardinals won the meet as a team.
“The Seward Invite was our first event of the year and so we really didn't know what to expect from this group,” Coach Drew Rische said. “We lost two state qualifiers from last year's team and so we knew we had to replace quite a bit of talent. Practices throughout the first four weeks of the season have been up and down, but we've been trying to focus on incorporating competition and simulating pressure situations however we could.”
Freshman Keaton Draeger shot 77 and placed third overall. Other medalists include Max Littrell with an 81 and both Ty Yeager and Liam Clarke shot 82 to finish 13th and 14th respectively. Owen Hesser was the fifth golfer and shot 92 for his first varsity meet over the last two seasons.
“I really felt at Seward that the boys were in a very good mental headspace and that they never got too high or too low,” Rische said. “We knew the conditions would cause errant shots at times and that keeping frustrations in check would be important. We got off to a really hot start and settled in for the rest of the day.”
Overall, Rische said he was happy with how the day went.
“It was a really fun day and I am super proud of this young team,” Rische said.
