Cardinal tennis plays final matches before state

The Crete boys’ tennis team played its final duals of the season last week in preparation for the state tournament.

The Cardinals lost to Elkhorn North 8-1 Oct. 5 and to York 6-3 Oct. 7.

Aidan McDowell won both his matches at No. 1 singles, beating Eli Shada of Elkhorn North 8-5 and Andrew Hammer of York 8-1. Travis Sweeny won his No. 3 singles match against York 8-3 and Sweeney teamed with Brock Heusinkvelt to win the No. 1 doubles match against York 8-5.

The Cardinals will compete in the Class B state tournament starting Thursday, Oct. 14, at Woods Tennis Center in Lincoln. Matches start at 9 a.m.

Aidan McDowell is seeded fourth at No. 1 singles and earned a first-round bye. He will play the winner of Omaha Roncalli/Scottsbluff in the second round.

At No. 2 singles, Isaac Penate will play Ryan Mensch of Elkhorn North in the first round. At No. 1 doubles, Brock Heusinkvelt and Travis Sweeney will play Creighton Sharp and Amir Saadi of Kearney Catholic. At No. 2 doubles, Mason Crumbliss and Lane Wendelin will play Hayden Wiese and Malachi Connell of Holdrege.
