Doane changes quarantine protocol

Started on Feb. 18, quarantine time at Doane University was shortened from 14-days to 10-days without testing and if no symptoms have been reported by daily monitoring.

The announcement came through university communications and is based on Center of Disease Control guidance stating, “residual post-quarantine transmission risk is estimated to be about one-percent with an upper limit of about ten-percent.”

“After day 10, persistent masking through day 14 and limiting interactions to essential activities only will be vital to preventing possible COVID-19 transmission,” the university announcement said.

This change is due to the low baseline positivity rate for return to campus testing and low number of positive COVID-19 cases among students in the last month.

As of Feb. 15, Doane has three positive cases and is in the yellow zone of the risk dial according to its online COVID-19 dashboard.

This change is dependent on the Doane community’s ability to remain compliant with physical distancing and mask requirements.

“Due to the current state of the pandemic on campus and locally, combined with your diligent COVID-19 prevention efforts, the length and burden of quarantine due to exposure can be reduced,” the announcement said.

Isolation requirements following a positive COVID-19 test will still be at least 10-days after onset symptoms or 24-hours after symptoms have resolved.
